HYDERABAD, FEB. 15. The Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) has charged the Government with shifting the tender packages for some of the proposed irrigation projects suddenly from Category II to I, with the intention of benefiting contractors. Addressing a press conference, T. Devender Goud and N. Janardhan Reddy, Deputy Leaders of the TDLP, and S. Maruthi, MLA, cited the example of works relating to the Flood Flow Canal of the Sriramsagar Project. For the 28 km to 70 km stretch of the canal falling in Category I, the works were divided into three packages and the tender bids received were quoted 5 per cent excess.
Probe sought
For similar works from 70 km point to 122 km coming under Category II, the rates quoted were 30 per cent less, they said. This was because the works were divided into seven packages raising the level of competition among the bidders. But now the Government cancelled these packages and shifted them to Category I, so that the contractors got the benefit of excess rates, they alleged and demanded an independent enquiry into it. "The reasons for making these changes should be made public". They said the Government was not matching its enthusiasm shown in calling of tenders with execution of the projects. Eight months had passed since the Government came up with grandiose plans yet there was no further work neither on new projects nor those grounded during the Telugu Desam rule. The Government wanted to merely finalise tenders and pay advance to the contractors, they alleged.
