Cuddapah
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDAPAH, FEB. 15. The Government has directed Sri Venkateswara University at Tirupati to take over the C.P. Brown Memorial Library at Cuddapah. The Principal Secretary of Higher Education, S. Chellappa, issued orders to the SVU Registrar in this connection following the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's approval of the proposals forwarded by the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, the library secretary, J. Hanumath Sastry, told The Hindu on Tuesday. The orders stipulated sanction of an annual block grant of Rs.15 lakhs for maintenance of the library, to be taken over by the university. Brown Library was constructed on the site where the British Collector, Charles Philip Brown, resided when he was the Cuddapah Collector in 1820 and resurrected Telugu language and literature. The library, developed by concerted efforts of the Brown Memorial Trust secretary, Hanumath Sastry, over the last three decades, is a treasure house of over 30,000 books. It has a corpus fund of Rs.11 lakhs and NSS grants of Rs. 12 lakhs sanctioned by the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, Dr. Sastry said. Philanthropists had contributed their mite to the library.
Problems faced
The library faced fund paucity, its staff underpaid and the long-awaited computerisation had not materialised so far. Dr. Sastry hoped SVU would resolve the problems and further develop the library.
