Ramakrishna Math to give house sites for fishermen

CUDDALORE, FEB. 15. Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, proposes to give house sites to North Mudasalodai fishermen, displaced by the tsunami, at West Mudasalodai in Cuddalore district.

A nine-acre land, worth about Rs. 20 lakhs will be divided into 104 plots of 30 x 60 feet each, says Arulkumar, secretary, Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya, Soorakuppam.

The Math will hand over the developed land to the district administration for construction of buildings (by the State Government). It also proposes to build a community hall and an overhead tank.

As part of rehabilitation of fishermen at Vadakku Mudasalodai and Reddiyarpettai, the Math will give 33 fibre boats fitted with engines, each costing Rs 1.5 lakhs. Each boat will be registered in the names of five fishermen. The Math has already given away fishing nets worth Rs. 13 lakhs in both the villages.

At a function at North Mudasalodai held yesterday for handing over the fishing materials provided by the Math, the Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 6 crores to the district for repairs to boats and nets.

For repairs to the nets Rs. 10,000 each was sanctioned to 102 fishermen, and for repairs to 28 boats, Rs. 11.60 lakhs was given. The rehabilitation measures were being taken up in coordination with service organisations.

Present on the occasion were the Math president, Swami Gautamananda, and the Ramakrishna Mission general secretary, Swami Smaranananda Maharaj.
