The flower dial in the sculpture park on the beach road in Visakhapatnam in a state of neglect.
VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 15. Beach Road is several things to several people. The morning walker, the tourist and evening visitor - everybody loves it. Just as it surprises each one with its beauty, a few jolts are also in store. For instance, take the Sculptor's Camp. As many as 21 sculptors from all over the country had made their contribution. With the pieces of sculpture on a variety of themes and the perfect ambience of the beach, it was an aesthetic experience. But all that has been a thing of the past with virtually no maintenance, and now it has become an affront to the senses. For instance, `Remnants of a river', true to the name, has dried up. The place has no greenery. The floral dial had fallen on bad days even before it was formally commissioned. Its hands and the equipment have been stolen and the person who has taken it on contract has been incurring losses.
Poor maintenance
Officials admit that for several years the park has not been maintained mainly because of water problem. The Municipal Corporartion officials say that watering of the greenery on Beach Road with tankers will be taken up soon. The Municipal Commissioner has drawn up a comprehensive plan to treat the sewerage water and a tank to store the treated water, and lay a distributory pipeline at a total cost of Rs.2 crores. The plan is to water the entire greenery on the Beach Road to add to its beauty. Until then, may be, the Sculptors' Camp has to wait.
