KOCHI, FEB. 15. The Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) today submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, seeking his support for various development programmes for Kochi, including the formation of an Islands Development Authority. It was the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, who mooted the idea of formation of an Island Development Authority for the comprehensive socio-development development of the islands in Kochi. The islands lack a good road link, drinking water and other basic amenities. Though Kochi is the development hub of Kerala, it lacks advanced transport system, planned road links and infrastructure, said the memorandum submitted by K. P. Dhanapalan, DCC president. The Congress leaders sought the intervention of the Prime Minister for clearing the projects such as the LNG terminal at Puthu Vypeen, Single Buoy Mooring facility of the Kochi Refinery, international bunkering and cruise terminals, international ship repair facility and Portland special economic zone. The DCC delegation included Congress leaders, M.V. Paul, K.M. Salim, T.Y. Usuf, N. Premachandran and G. Sudhambika.
