Bus staff in Kalamassery to strike work

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 15. Private bus employees in the Kalamassery region under the banner of different trade unions, have announced a 48-hour-long strike from February 25.

The strike will be organised as part of the protest against the Regional Transport Authority's (RTA) decision to continue the present route at TVS Junction, in Kalamassery.

The employees of all private buses passing through TVS Junction, Kalamassery will strike work, according to Joy Joseph, general secretary of the Private Bus Thozhilali Federation, affiliated to the AITUC and N.M. Khaneef, secretary of the Motor Thozhilali Union, affiliated to the INTUC.

In a joint statement made here on Tuesday, the leaders demanded that the one-way system should be implemented at TVS Junction for preventing accidents. Diverting buses through South Kalamassery necessitated that they cut across the NH bypass at the accident-prone TVS Junction. They pointed out that the RTA board was postponing the implementation of decisions taken at its meeting held in July, 2004.

They have also warned that the bus employees of Kalamassery region will launch an indefinite strike from March 10, unless the RTA board took a clear decision on the issue. It was pointed out that the one-way system was not being implemented to protect the vested interests of some traders and shop owners in South Kalamassery.
