THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 15. The Hindustani singer Meeta Pandit has stressed the need to retain melody in music. Melody is fast getting drowned in cacophony and the focus should be on bringing it back, she said. Meeta is in the city to present a `jugalbandhi' with the French pianist Allie Delfau at Tagore Theatre on Wednesday evening. The programme is being organised by Alliance Francaise in association with the Public Relations Department. Addressing presspersons along with Allie here this evening, Meeta said that they were presenting a unique blend of classical, jazz and contemporary music. The programme is based on melody and cannot be called fusion music. "Fusion is more confusion and ours is a unique blend of three streams," she said. Meeta, who belongs to the sixth generation of singers of the Gwalior gharana, said that she would never deviate from the traditional style. The same was true of Allie who has scored music for French films, ballets and theatre works. She too is a votary of classical music and well-versed in western classical and jazz music. It was their liking for classical music that prompted them to come together.
Concerts
The duo has held concerts in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune. They had also recorded their compositions but albums have not yet been released. Meeta had conducted programmes in France for three months from October to December in 2003 and it was in Paris that she met Allie. They identified common areas of interest and decided to work together.
