Council fails to take up proposals to levy cess

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, FEB. 15. Though the proposals to levy infrastructure and solid waste management cess were tabled in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council on Tuesday, they could not be taken up because the members were forced to spend the day discussing the protest by the members of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Noukarara Kendriya Sangha.

However, the council approved 14 subjects pertaining to renaming of roads and two regarding lease of land to various organisations.

Adjournment

The Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, abruptly adjourned the House when the former Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, objected to the renaming of a cross road in Jayanagar.

Mr. Ramesh pointed out that the BMP had earlier decided not to rename cross roads in the city and that it was also recorded in the BMP Council's proceedings.

SKR Market

Earlier, the Sri Krishnarajendra Market ward corporator, Syed Jaleel, alleged that the BMP had mortgaged the SKR Market Complex with the Syndicate Bank for a loan of Rs. 70 crores.

"Please tell me if this is true. Our officials posted at the market are making money by harassing some shopkeepers and also allowing some to escape without paying rents. If the SKR Market is managed properly, our revenue can increase by crores of rupees," he said.

Car parking

The BMP has proposed to construct modern car parking lots on Dickenson Road (near Kamaraj Road), in front of Sukh Sagar in the Majestic area and near Russell Market in Shivajinagar.

Though a subject pertaining to this was tabled, it could not be taken up.

Computerised meters

According to the proposal, computerised meters would be installed in the car parking lots to be constructed on build-operate-transfer basis.
