CHITRADURGA, FEB. 16. D. Thangaraj, Secretary to the Government in charge of the district, has asked officials to expedite the drought relief and drinking water schemes in the villages, as the Government has released additional grants. Speaking at the meeting convened to review the progress of drinking water projects here on Tuesday, he said the Government would release funds needed for the implementation of drinking water projects. He asked the officers to take steps to provide power to such projects immediately after the completion of the work. Mr. Thangaraj urged officials to reduce material costs while taking up works under drought relief programmes, so that more works can be taken up. He stressed the need to prepare the list of works to be taken up under job guarantee scheme and begin the soon after the release of funds. He wanted repair works on hospitals and construction of residential quarters for the health workers taken up, as a grant of Rs. 20 lakhs has been released.
Precautionary measures
Mr. Thangaraj directed officials to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of contagious diseases that may break out during the summer. The hospital committees headed by executive officers of the taluk panchayats should take steps to collect the prescribed fees in hospital promptly and make it available for the expenses of emergency cases. The Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, spoke about the steps taken to solve the drinking water problem. He also informed Mr. Thangaraj about the proposal of Rs. 5 crores to solve the problem in 354 villages with acute water shortage and Rs. 259 lakh-proposal for urban water supply, which has been submitted. Alternate arrangements have been made to supply water from 500 private bore wells, which have been identified, and water will be drawn on rental basis, he added. Narayanaswamy, chief executive officer; B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police; H.S. Vijaya Kumar, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner; and Shamla Ahamed, Assistant Commissioner, were present.
