Chennai takes carrom title

CHENNAI, FEB. 16. Chennai Port Trust won the carrom team championship, beating Mumbai Port Trust 2-1 in the all-India Major Ports sports meet here on Wednesday.

In the final match CPT's S. Rajaseelan beat Shalendra Barve 24-23, 25-0, R. Venkatesh downed Anand Vaidya 25-2, 24-18 and Ashok Ghole prevailed over S. M. Balaji 19-23, 25-14, 25-5.

Theoplus Mohandoss of CPT bagged the veterans' singles title, beating G. Mahendran (CPT) 25-6, 25-18. In the semifinals, Mohandoss beat Prakash (MPT) 16-25, 25-18, 25-24 and Mahendran got the better of Ramesh Chauhan (MPT) 25-4, 25-22.

In athletics, three Chennai participants, Arivazhagan, Nooshen Rajendran and M. Sangeetha, set new meet records.

Athletics: Men: Long jump: Arivazhagan (Che-7.19 m-record); 100m: M. Kumaran (Che-11.2 s); 1500m: Mahendran (Che-4:09.9); 400m hurdles: Sasant Dhal (Paradip-1:01.2).

Women: Long jump: Nooshen Rajendran (Chen-5.69 m-record); High jump: M. Sangeetha (Che-1.60 m-record); 100m: Nooshen (Che-12.6s).

Boys u-18: 100m: Biju Rajan (Mormugao-11.6 s); Discus: S.R. Suryakumar (Che-30.28 m); 3000m: Sreeram (Kandla-10.36.8); 400m hurdles: Biju Rajan (Mormugao-1:01.2); U-16: 100m: Subrajit Gayam (Mangalore-12.0 s); Discus: Sruesh Rathnaraj (Che- 23.0 m); Chandramohan (Paradip-5.82 m); U-14: 100m: Sanjay Swain (Paradip-11.8 s).

Girls U-18: 100m: Bhakti Palav (Mumbai-13.5 s); 3000m: Sreeja Krishnan (Cochin-17:03.7); U-16: 100m: Balwander Kaur (Mormugao-14.3 s); Javelin: Yogini Avchad (Mumbai-16.22 m); u-14: 100m: Saritha Sambro (JNPT-14.2 s).
