Tirupati
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI, FEB. 16. The issue, which has come to be known as a `water war' between farmers of Srikalahasti and residents of Tirupati, assumed one more dimension on Wednesday with the BJP jumping into the fray. The TDP and Congress have already locked horns on the issue even as the authorities concerned, after initial inertia, are bracing themselves to address the problem. The Engineering wing of the Tirupati Municipality has decided to close the valves installed at seven points all along the 40 km pipeline connecting the storage point -- Kailasagiri reservoir -- with Tirupati. The decision became imperative because of farmers around Srikalahasti frequently tampering with them to meet the irrigation needs of their agricultural land. The removal of the valves would nonetheless be a serious impediment when the supply along the pipeline needs to be closed to attend to any repairs due to blockage, breaches and so on. The town and district leaders of the BJP/BJYM held a novel demonstration in front of the municipal office denouncing the `dubious role' of the Tirupati Congress MLA, M. Venkatramana, alleging that he had sided with the farmers of Srikalahasti to the detriment of his Tirupati voters. The protestors held empty water pots on their heads and sat outside the municipal office chanting anti-Government and anti- MLA slogans. The State General Secretary of BJYM, G. Bhanuprakash Reddy, who led the demonstration said the Congress Government, which claimed to be the champion of the cause of the farmers, if it wanted to could lay a pipeline to Srikalahasti from the K.P. Canal to meet the irrigation needs of farmers instead of forcibly diverting the drinking water meant of Tirupati.
