Tranquiliser guns to tackle stray dogs

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 16. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi today approved the purchase of one tranquiliser gun each for each of its 12 zones for tackling the problem of stray canines and also declared that it was holding talks with the Uttar Pradesh Government for obtaining permission to release the stray canines caught in Delhi near Vrindavan or Mathura.

Announcing the decision to purchase the tranquiliser guns, the Municipal Commissioner said they would be strategically placed in each of the zones to respond quickly in the event of any stray canine getting violent. But while they have been procured for the canine population, these guns can also come in handy in taming violent cattle, as in a recent incident two persons were gored to death by a bull in East Delhi.

Noting that the Society for Stray Canine Birth Control was formed in 2002 to provide a common platform between various government agencies and non-governmental organisation to work together for putting up a coordinated and concerted effort to strengthen the sterilisation and anti-rabies immunisation of stray dogs to check their population, Mr Mehta said it has taken four animal shelters and kennel and further allotted them to NGOs for post operative care of dogs.

Stating that stray dogs are picked up by MCD and handed over to the veterinary hospitals for sterilisation and immunisation, he said the NGOs were also picking up the dogs on their own and sterilising them at the shelters.

In the eight month period between April 1, 2004 and November 30, 2004, he said 11 of these NGOs had sterilised and immunised 12,030 canines and the target of 20,000 animals was expected to be met for the financial year.
