THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 16. The Kerala Parallel Colleges Association has demanded that the government repeal the decision to levy service tax on parallel colleges. The association president, R. Achuthan Nair, and the general secretary, A.M. Joseph, told presspersons here today that the 5,000-odd parallel and tutorial colleges are struggling for survival. With the government sanctioning Plus-Two courses in the unaided sector and degree courses in off-campus centres in addition to the aided schools, there is considerable fall in strength in parallel colleges. The decision to levy service tax has worsened the situation, they said. As many as one lakh persons, including teaching and non-teaching staff, are working in these colleges. The educated unemployed persons have crossed the age limit for government jobs and the government should take immediate steps to redress their grievances, the association said. It has submitted a charter of demands to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy. The association has sought government recognition to parallel colleges. A welfare fund should be set up for principals, teachers and non-teaching staff without causing financial burden to the managements. The University of Kerala should revive the private registration for postgraduate courses and unify the fee for private registration, Kannur University should start private registration from the next academic year and Calicut University should set up examination centres for private candidates within the limits of Kannur University too, they added.
