A writer of life in the raw

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 16. Kovilan, the celebrated Malayalam writer who has been honoured with a Fellowship by the Sahitya Akademi, writing is a lot about delineating life in the raw.

Winner of several awards, Kovilan's is a creative articulation that has marked itself apart in Malayalam. His has been a journey through harsh terrains of life. The bitter discoveries of a battle-hardened life has shaped his creative persona.

Eighty-year-old Kovilan is the pen-name of Kandanisseri Vattomparambil Velappan Ayyappan, who was born near Guruvayur in Thrissur. He was expelled from college for his active participation in the Quit India movement. By then he had written three novels. In 1943, Kovilan joined the Royal Indian Navy and got training as Anti Submarine Detector Operator. He left the British Navy following the famous naval rebellion of 1946 and returned home.

In 1948, Kovilan joined the Corps of Signals of the Indian Army as a radio mechanic. He also specialised in electronics. For five years, he lived in the Himalayas. He retired from the Army in 1968 as Havildar Major. Ever since his retirement, Kovilan has been living in Pullanikkunnu, in Kandanisseri.

Kovilan has published eleven novels, 12 short story collections, three essay collections and one play. He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for novel in 1972 for his novel, `Thottangal', and the the Akademi Award for short stories in 1977 for his collection titled `Sakunam'. In 1995, he won the Muttathu Varkey Award. In 1997, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with a Fellowship. His novel, `Thattakam', was chosen for the Kerala Sahitya Parishath award in 1998. The same work won for him a third Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for novel in the same year and the Vayalar Award and the N.V. Puraskaram in 1999.

Kovilan'a major works include Thattakam, Janmantharangal, Bharathan, Himalayam, Thottangal, Thazhvarakal, Ezhamedangal, A Minus B and Thakarnna Hrudayangal (novels), Board Out (Novellette), Kovilante Kathakal and Theranjedutha Kathakal, Sakunam and Oru kashanam asthi (stories) and Kathayum Kathakalum and Atmabhavangal (essays).
