This Day That Age
Addressing a conference of State Ministers to discuss the formation of State Electricity Boards, which began in New Delhi on February 16, Mr. Gulzarilal Nanda, Union Minister for Irrigation, Power and Planning, said that the urgency for the rapid development of the electricity supply industry was obvious. He attached great importance to the development of electricity being entrusted to autonomous boards as envisaged in the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948. He said he had no doubt that the obvious and inherent benefits accruing from the constitution of these boards, along with the practical experience of their working gained in the States where they had been set up, would not fail to carry conviction. He hoped that all States would constitute the boards without further delay. Some of the State Governments have asked for extension of time, and some do not consider it necessary to constitute them as they feel that the rationalisation of production and supply of electricity expected from them had already been achieved through their electricity departments.
