SUBRAHMANYA, FEB. 17. The temple town of Kukke Sri Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk is all geared up for religious and cultural activities to be organised as part of the "Brahmakalashotsava" scheduled to begin on Friday. The event marks the renovation of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The roofing above the sanctum sanctorum as well at the "Mukhamantapa" has been renovated. A series of intricate motifs have been carved around the sanctum sanctorum depicting lions, peacocks and deities including Subrahmanya, Ganesha and Shiva. Sculptors have also carved intricate designs of deities on wood panels. The roof over the sanctum sanctorum has been covered with copper plates. A sum of Rs. 1.5 crore has been spent on the renovation work, the Assistant Commissioner, Puttur Subdivision, and the administrative officer of the temple, Subraya Kamath, said. The renovation work was started on April 25, 2004. A sum of Rs. 54 lakhs has been spent on the woodwork, Rs. 14.4 lakhs on covering the roof over the sanctum sanctorum with copper plates, Rs. 15.6 lakhs on labour for the work on wood as well the copper plates and their installation and Rs. 9.8 lakhs on constructing a granite (Krishna shile) basement for the sanctum sanctorum.
