Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the editorial, "Dealing with naxalism" (Feb. 17). The naxalite challenge, as pointed out, should not be seen as a law and order problem alone. But while socio-economic causes contribute to the growth of the movement, it is also true that naxalites create serious law and order problems. The challenge calls for a two-pronged strategy aimed at tackling the naxalites, on the one hand, and bailing out the tribals and other deprived sections from the forces of exploitation, on the other.
P.U. Krishnan,
Sir, Socio-economic issues need to be addressed not because the naxalites use them as excuses to wage war against the state, but because that is the right thing to do. But it is also time responsible sections of the media stopped condoning, if not justifying, naxalism. No cause, however worthy, justifies use of arms in a democratic country. It is not just an insult to the general populace but also to those sections that use democratic means to achieve the very same ends.
V. Raja,
Sir, Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jalagam Vengala Rao dealt with the naxal problem with dexterity and pragmatism, and almost wiped out naxalism from the State. He created decent means of livelihood for the families of slain and surrendered naxalites so that the younger generations were not misled. He improved the lot of the tribals to ensure there were no fresh additions to the cadres. He also broke the nexus between the police and the naxalites by bringing in personnel from the southern districts to the naxal-infested northern districts.
G.M. Rama Rao,
