Dacoits surrender before Minister

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL, FEB.17. The gang of dacoits led by Arvind Gujar, wanted in about 45 cases of dacoity, kidnapping and murder, surrendered at the district Reserve Police lines at Bhind in Madhya Pradesh today.

Arvind Gujar was carrying a reward of Rs.20,000 in Uttar Pradesh and Rs.10,000 in Madhya Pradesh. The gang had been operating in the Gwalior region and across the border in Uttar Pradesh. In all, eight dacoits, including the gang leader Arvind Gujar and his wife Sheela, surrendered with their weapons before the State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Rustam Singh, the Minister of State for Home, Jagdeesh Dewda, the organisation in-charge of the Madhya Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Kaptan Singh Solanki and the local MP and MLAs.

The other members of this gang, who surrendered today, include Mangal Singh, Deepu alias Kalia, Ganga Pande,

Neeraj, Anita and Rambir Singh Gujar. Rambir is the elder brother of Arvind Gujar. Amit, an eleven-year-old boy, who had been kidnapped from Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh, also accompanied the gang when it surrendered.

This gang was carrying weapons. While the gang leader surrendered with an AK-47 rifle, the others were carrying an SLR semi-automatic rifle, .315 bore guns, carbine, mauser and .303 guns.

The Director-General of Madhya Pradesh Police, S.K. Das, told The Hindu that the Arvind Gujar gang had

surrendered as a result of pressure mounted by the police. "It was a genuine surrender as the dacoits had laid down even their most sophisticated weapons," he said. The dreaded dacoit Ramasaray alias Fakkad Baba had also dodged the police for a long time before he surrendered at Bhind about six months ago, he added.
