Govt. threatens action against guilty in dropsy cases

LUCKNOW, FEB. 17. The Uttar Pradesh Government today announced in the Assembly that it would investigate the dropsy cases reported recently in the State Capital and take strict action against the guilty.

The Congress raised this issue in the Assembly through a notice for an adjournment motion, along with the Opposition parties.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohammed Azam Khan, while justifying the concern of the people towards dropsy, said the cases of adulteration of mustard oil would be investigated.

Later, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey announced that he had admitted a discussion on the issue.

Mr Khan, however, appeared annoyed over not getting a reply from the State Health Department in the dropsy case.

Meanwhile, BJP's Suresh Srivastava demanded the constitution of a team of experts to probe the issue and to keep all the dropsy patients in one hospital. The party's Laxmikant Bajpai also demanded that those found to be adulterating the edible oils should be booked under the NSA and that a laboratory should be set up at the divisional level.

Congress leader Pramod Tiwari blamed the BJP for the dropsy cases. He said the Lucknow Nagar Nigam was under the control of the BJP, but it was the responsibility of the State Government to control it.

Leader of the Opposition Lalji Tandon, however, blamed the State Health Department for the trouble. He criticised that in two years, a mere two samples were collected for laboratory testing of oil adulteration.

BSP's Sukhdev Rajbhar said the courage of the people indulging in adulteration had increased to an extent that they were beating the officials collecting samples from their stock. -- UNI
