Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 17. The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president, V. Narayanasamy, MP, today said the All-India Congress Committee had put off elections to the State unit of the party, including the post of president, to April. He told newsmen here that the polls were originally scheduled for March. But, following the tsunami devastation in the Pondicherry and Karaikal, the schedule had been revised. The general secretary of the Karnataka State Congress Committee, Nagaraj, would be the observer.
Enquiry sought
Mr. Narayanasamy alleged that financial assistance distributed by the Administration to fishermen to repair boats damaged by the tsunami or to purchase new vessels had ended up going to `ineligible' persons. Alleging malpractive, he called for a full-fledged enquiry into the issue. It was puzzling that residents of an area several km away from the coastline were getting aid in Uppalam constituency though they were not fishermen. The Congress leader said he had urged the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, to order an enquiry into the issue. Stern action should be taken against those found guilty. He scoffed at the contention of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, that along with the Assembly poll there would be elections to Lok Sabha also. The Chief Minister was only indulging in a wishful thinking, he said.
Corruption charges
On recent allegations by the former Home Minister, P. Kannan, that corruption was gaining ground in various Government departments and his demand that Mr. Rangasamy should quit the office, the PCC leader said he would have a talk with Mr. Kannan. Mr. Narayanasamy said he would also meet with Mr. Rangasamy before drawing the attention of the high command to the developments. A team of Maharashtra officials would soon visit Pondicherry to work out the modalities of construction of houses by that Government for fishermen.
