Talks on elections to Gorkha council fail

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 17. Talks involving the Centre, the West Bengal Government and the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) today failed to arrive at a decision on holding elections to the Council and giving it more powers.

After over an hour-long meeting here, the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, told reporters that another round of tripartite talks with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and DGHC chief, Subhash Ghising, would be held but did not specify any dates.

Mr. Ghising insisted that elections to the Council, whose term expired by March 26, were secondary and his main objective was that more powers be granted to it before holding of polls.

Mr. Bhattacharjee asserted that elections should be held according to schedule and that the issue of empowerment could be decided simultaneously.

Mr. Ghising said the DGHC, which was in existence for the last 15 years, should be given greater autonomy and constitutional recognition on the lines of Bodoland Autonomous Council.
