Cricket
By P. Subramanyam
LONDON, FEB. 17. A new monthly magazine called `SPIN' hit the newsstands, as they went on sale this morning for the first time, which claims and promises to revolutionise the way cricket is covered in print just as Channel 4 and SKY have done for cricket on television. SPIN's fresh, lively, mainstream approach and its exclusive use of TV's Hawkeye graphics, according to the publishers, will take cricket fans closer to the game. Editor, Duncan Steer, formerly editor of the Channel 4 cricket magazine, said: "SPIN is not just about English cricket, it's about world cricket. It is a completely new voice in the game and a genuinely independent one. It is a modern magazine and we believe, it is just what cricket fans have been waiting for." An array of contributors fill the magazine's pages each month, including the former Pakistan captain, Imran Khan, Channel 4's `analyst' Simon Hughes and former Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Ganguly keen to play in county
In the first issue of SPIN, released this morning, Indian skipper, Sourav Ganguly expressed his interest to play a season of county cricket this year, if possible. The Indian captain had been seen as a possible skipper at Somerset before the Division Two strugglers opted for South Africa's Graeme Smith instead, it was stated. And, now, Ganguly told the launch edition of SPIN magazine that he is "looking beyond Taunton for another club." He said: "I'll play for anybody, I'm not fussed where, I just want to play a season of county cricket again. I've got something to prove."
Moody eyeing England job
Australia's Tom Moody wants to coach England when Duncan Fletcher steps down. There is speculation that the Ashes could be Fletcher's final series. Moody said: "It would be a great challenge to have this assignment. Duncan is obviously in the position at the moment and has done an outstanding job over the last five years." Moody is on contract at Worcestershire until the end of the season and could be considered as Australia's next coach once John Buchanan's contract expires.
