ANANTAPUR, FEB. 17. The 19th district congress of the Communist Party of India, which concluded at Dharmavaram on Wednesday, has requested the State Government to announce Rs. 2,000-crore special package for comprehensive development of the district in five years. Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, the party district secretary, M.V. Ramana, and the joint secretary, C. Jaffer, said that the meet unanimously adopted resolutions seeking the special package, completion of all pending irrigation projects and taking up of stage-II of Tungabhadra HLC among others. They suggested imposing ban on the practice of child labour and setting up residential schools for girls to improve literacy rate. They urged the Government to restrict the licences to bars and liquor shops. On the trafficking of women from Kadiri, Tanakallu, N.P. Kunta and other areas in the district to places like Chennai, Mumbai, Goa and others, the CPI leaders opined that poverty was forcing women into such an activity. It could be prevented by extending financial assistance without any conditions and implementation of welfare activities like housing and adult education.
Office-bearers
Meanwhile, the party meet unanimously re-elected M.V. Ramana the secretary for the third time in a row for a term of another three years. C. Jaffer was elected joint secretary and another 17 members were elected to the district executive committee.
