DAVANGERE, FEB. 17. A meeting of Congress workers here today was marred by ugly scenes with many workers demanding that Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA and senior leader, be made a Minister immediately. The workers stood up and vociferously put forth their demand when the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, began to address them. Mr. Poojary was a mute witness to the noisy scenes for some time even as S.S. Mallikarjun, former Minister and son of Mr. Shivashankarappa, appealed to the workers to restrain themselves. Mr. Poojary told the workers: "Shout loudly; let newspapers and the electronic media show to the whole world the discipline in the party." After the cacophony died down, Mr. Poojary said the workers have a bright future and they stand a good chance of becoming Ministers or chairmen of boards.
Gram panchayat polls
Owing to the drought in the previous three years and internal squabbles, the Congress could not get a working majority in the Assembly elections, he said and called upon the workers to set aside their differences and work for the party. The elections to the gram panchayats are crucial. If Congress workers contesting the elections win them, then 94,000 members of the party will come to power and they will have Rs. 3,500 crores at their disposal to spend on development activities in their respective constituencies. So, it is the duty of all party workers to ensure that the Congress candidates win the elections, he said. Mr. Poojary disclosed that he has instructed all Ministers, MLAs, MLCs and office-bearers of the District Congress Committees to be in their respective district headquarters and support the party candidates during this crucial juncture. On seat adjustments, he said: "Our workers are capable of winning any election and we need not make any seat adjustments with the Janata Dal (Secular)." Earlier Mr. Mallikarjun and the Minister for Social Welfare and district in-charge, Y. Nagappa, addressed the gathering.
