People of Nyamathi to boycott polls again

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, FEB. 17. People of Nyamathi Gram Panchayat have decided to abstain from the gram panchayat elections this time too, protesting against the inaction of the Government on their demand to make Nyamthi a town panchayat.

They boycotted the elections four times in the past and there is no elected body at Nyamathi.

Former gram panchayat members said that the population of Nyamathi has crossed 10,000.

They said that Nyamathi is eligible be upgraded to a town panchayat. Repeated pleas to upgrade it have fallen on deaf ears, they said. The members also said that the people will boycott the elections till Nyamathi is made a town panchayat.

No papers filed

Our Bellary Staff Correspondent reports: Villagers of Ambli, Kuditinimaggi, and Sangameshwar in Hagari Bommanahalli taluk, who come under the Ambli Gram Panchayat, have decided to boycott the elections.

No nomination papers have been filed for the ten-member panchayat.

The villagers said that they are unhappy over the reorganisation of the jurisdiction of the panchayat.

Ambli village had six of the total ten seats and, after reorganisation, the number has been reduced to five.

Kuditinimaggi's representation has gone up from two to three.

The Ambli villagers, who decided to boycott the polls, have been staging a dharna to register their protest against the reorganisation.

The villagers of Sangameshwar have decided to boycott the polls to protest against the removal of a polling booth from the village and attaching them to Kuditinimaggi village.

According to them, the village has a population of over 800 and a booth used to be set up regularly.
