CPI(M) for all-party panels to monitor tsunami relief

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB.17. Relief and rehabilitation measures in the tsunami-hit areas in the State were not properly implemented, the State unit of the CPI(M), said today.

The State CPI(M) secretary, N. Varadarajan, said in a statement here that a resolution adopted at the State secretariat meeting of the party on Wednesday pointed out that the affected people in many areas had been resorting to agitations to highlight the demand for relief.

The missing persons in the tsunami-hit areas should be treated as dead and relief should be given to their families. Victims other than fishermen, including farmers, had not been given any relief, he said.

Since the fishermen were not willing to accept the offer of bank loan and subsidy for the purchase of boats and nets, the Centre and the State Government should provide adequate relief to enable them to resume fishing.

As farmlands had become saline, the affected farmers and farm workers should be offered a relief package. He urged the State Government to form vigilance committees, comprising representatives of political parties to ensure implementation of rehabilitation measures without irregularities.

The administration should ensure that the livelihood of fishermen was not affected while relocating their dwelling units.

The time for issuance and receipt of application forms for renewal of ration cards should be extended, he said, adding that more centres should be set up to issue and receive fresh application forms.
