CHENNAI, FEB. 17. The Bharatiya Janata Party today welcomed the Union Minister and Congress leader, E.V.K. S. Elangovan's observation that Tamil Nadu could not remain, for long, an exception from the trend coalitions. V. Vaidyalingam, vice-president of the party's State unit, told reporters that coalition governments would provide national parties their due share in power. Some constituents of the United Progressive Alliance indicated their preference for such an arrangement. As the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were not known for favouring coalition governments in the State, both should spell out their stand. On the AIADMK adopting a resolution calling for re-introduction of the ballot paper system, Mr. Vaidyalingam said the Election Commission was bound to clear any doubts or apprehensions of that party on electronic voting machines. He urged the Government to extend the deadline for renewal of ration cards by one month. He wanted the authorities to drop the New Veeranam extension scheme of putting up collector wells on the Coleroon. Referring to Mr. Elangovan's statement that a negotiated settlement alone would solve the Cauvery issue, he said it was condemnable as the proceedings before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal were nearing conclusion. Such a statement amounted to making a mockery of the legal battle witnessed so far.
