CHENNAI, FEB. 17. The Chennai Kancheepuram Tiruvallur Sand Lorry Owners' Association has alleged that private operators are quarrying large quantities of sand from Government quarries in connivance with some officials and selling it at a higher rate. The association president, S. Yuvaraj, told mediapersons here on Thursday that nearly 4,000 lorry owners in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur were forced to buy sand at a higher rate from private yards set up by operators. He said the "illegal operations" of the past two months had resulted in considerable loss to the exchequer, despite the Government taking over mining-distribution operations all over the State. The association had made a representation to the Public Works Department (PWD) and urged the Chief Minister to ensure that sand was sold directly to the lorry owners.
