Happening... and how!

By Santosh Patnaik

VISAKHAPATNAM: A beehive of activity is witnessed in and around Visakhapatnam with several entrepreneurs lining up to set up their units.

The enthusiasm generated, particularly in the last eight months typifies Visakhapatnam's "happening city" status.

"There is no doubt that Visakhapatnam is the most happening city in the State with several mega projects in the pipeline," said the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna.

Abuzz with activity

The district officials are on their toes with clearances, field investigations, land acquisition, meeting delegations and holding review meetings. A major indicator of the changing scenario is the spurt in real estate prices.

"We are flooded with queries on investment potential in Visakhapatnam. All the big projects are progressing as per schedule. The turning point for Visakhapatnam will be the commissioning of the first phase of airport expansion by June 2005," the District Collector, Praveen Prakash, said.

According to him, Sahara Airlines has already launched its operations and several other national and international airliners have evinced interest to operate flights from the city once airport modernisation is completed.

Industrial corridor

As part of the development of industrial corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, Pharma City will come up near Parawada under public--private partnership (PPP). Land acquisition is under process for the Special Economic Zone at Achutapuram. The Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure Industries Corporation (APIIC) is looking for 200 acres for setting up a Ceramic Park.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has shown interest for acquiring 3,000 acres. Gangavaram port, developed under the private sector with an investment of over Rs. 2,000 crores, and the Visakhapatnam Industrial Water Supply Project, aimed at diverting Godavari waters to the city at a cost of Rs. 650 crores, are also in advance stages of completion.

RITES India Limited will prepare a detailed project report on developing a Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) in the city at a cost of Rs. 2,000 crores.

Hub for IT units

Another aim is to make the city an IT hub. The Satyam Group has sought 200 acres near Bhimili. The Government is toying with the idea of constructing twin cyber towers on 25 acres of land near Uplands area and a cyber park on TB Hospital land.
