Raids on shops misusing LPG cylinders

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB 17. The Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the petroleum sector carried out a dawn-to-dusk drive against misuse of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes in the peripheral areas of Coimbatore City today. Special teams formed by the three oil corporations began the surprise raids in Karumathampatti, Annur and Somanur areas.

The special enforcement teams led by T.Suresh Kumar, Executive Sales Officer, Hindusthan Petroleum Corporation, K. Govindaraj, Sales Officer, Indian Oil Corporation, D. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Manager (LPG - Sales), Indane and S. Sathish Kumar, Senior Sales Officer, Bharat Petroleum Corporation kept a tab on all commercial establishments known for misusing the LPG cylinders.

During the raid, the officials seized 32 cylinders with a larger share of 22 coming from Annur and the rest from Karumathampatti and Somanur.

As many as 32 sale/delivery vouchers meant for individual customers were seized from one vessel shop in Karumathampatti area and the vouchers indicated that the shop owner was indulging in rotation of cylinders. Such practices could delay the refill for individual customers who were desperately waiting for their refill, the raiding teams pointed out. A cylinder was found being misused in one of the fabricating units in Karumathampatti area for the purpose of welding iron and steel. All the cylinders have been seized. The officials pointed out that a commercial purpose cylinder weighing 19 kg cost nearly Rs 678.12 against the subsidised price of a domestic cylinder weighing 14.2 kg priced at Rs 288.60. The huge subsidy available for domestic LPG cylinders always lured commercial establishments like hotels, bakeries, tea-stalls, eateries and restaurants to go in for gross misuse of these cylinders, the officials pointed out.

In the event of a misuse of LPG cylinders coming to notice, the public could call up 22307459 (Hindusthan Petroleum), 2217376 (Indian Oil - Indane) and 2534336 (Bharat Petroleum - Bharatgas). The identity of the informant/caller would be kept confidential, the officials assured.
