Steps to ensure proper maintenance of Mahal

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, FEB. 17. The Tirumalai Nayak Mahal administration has decided to provide sprinklers and repair the existing faulty motors to ensure proper maintenance of the lawns around the monument.

According to official sources, the grass and plants in the lawns, which were developed recently as part of a beautification and renovation programme at a cost of Rs. 1 crore, funded by the State Tourism department, were withering away due to non-availability of proper facilities to water them. Even the pumping motors installed in the monumental site have not been functioning for a couple of months now owing to technical snags. Steps were being taken to repair these motors as well, with a view to providing proper water facility for maintenance of the garden.

A top official of the Tamil Development and Culture, who visited the Mahal recently, inspected the garden and other renovation works carried out at the monument.

The official also held a meeting with the staff of various Government departments and discussed several aspects of the second phase of renovation work, which would be carried out at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

In the second phase, it has been planned to repair the damage in the inner ceiling of the Darbar Hall and plastering and washing and colouring of walls and stucco (limestone) figures in the ceiling. In addition to these, repair works would be carried out in the `palli arai' (bed chamber), Nataka Salai and on pillars.

The official, who earlier visited the Government Museum located on the Gandhi Museum premises, instructed the staff to identify an appropriate site to construct a building for its own since the present one was inadequate.

Similarly, on the long pending request of the Department of Art and Culture to allot space for opening an art gallery in a prominent place in the city, the official had assured to take up the issue with the authorities concerned and find a solution.
