This Day That Age
The Speaker gave a ruling in the Madras Assembly on February 17 that he should be addressed as "Mr. Speaker" and not otherwise. The occasion for the ruling arose when Mr. S. Ramalingam (Communist-Tanjore) chose to address the Chair as "Comrade Speaker" while moving that the Declaration of May Day Holiday Bill be taken into consideration. Thereupon, a few members rose and wanted a ruling whether the Speaker could be addressed as "Comrade" as the member had done.
