PONDICHERRY, FEB. 18. The Edouard Goubert municipal market in Muthialpet is a picture of chaos. The vegetable market also known as Grand Bazaar (and Periya Kadai in Tamil) was constructed during the French rule. The market is too congested for free movement of vendors and their goods. A proposal had once been mooted to procure a loan Housing and Urban Development Corporation for refurbishing the existing structure. But no palpable action has been initiated in this regard, said an official source. The problem has been compounded by makeshift structures that have been put up haphazardly. Sacks of vegetables and boxes of goods are dumped on the pathway inside the market, making it difficult even for customers to walk. The Muthialpet Consumer Group presented a petition to Lt Governor M. M. Lakhera recently on the need to redesign and expand the vegetable market. S. Shanmugasundaram, president, said several representations had been sent to the government highlighting the lack of amenities at Muthialpet. Lack of planning and shops had been responsible for the chaotic scenario, acknowledged a former Municipal councillor.
