PONDICHERRY, FEB. 19. The Pondicherry administration has set up a governing body for the Bharathidasan Government College for women here, following grant of autonomous status to the college. The Education Secretary, B.V. Selvaraj, said in a release here on Friday that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had approved the status for the college. The Secretary to Education is the chairman of the governing body, with the Principal of the college named member secretary. It will have a representative of the UGC; the Director of Collegiate and Technical Education and the Dean of the School of Physical, Chemical and Applied Sciences in the Pondicherry University will be members. R. Balakrishnan, a retired lecturer in the department of Physics of the Pondicherry University, has been named controller of examinations in the college. The college will determine and prescribe its own courses and syllabi and redesign the courses to suit local needs. It will evolve methods of assessment of students' performance, hold examinations and notify the results. An academic council has also been formed under the chairmanship of the Principal. All Heads of Departments and senior faculty members of the college are members of the council, apart from three nominees of the Pondicherry University. The council with Boards of Studies for every subject would consider and formulate new courses and new syllabi with the approval of the governing body. Mr. Selvaraj said the UGC had already released Rs. 5 lakhs for the college for improving the infrastructure.
