Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, FEB. 19. Leaders, both political and apolitical, arrived at a consensus to elect candidates unopposed to the Kurgodu Gram Panchayat in Bellary taluk. The village, which has a population of over 17,000, had been unanimously electing members under the leadership of Rajashekar Gowd. A notable feature is that the tradition has been followed even after the demise of Mr. Gowd. During the previous term, the villagers endorsed the view of Mr. Gowd of that Kurgodu Gram Panchayat should be upgraded to a town panchayat and boycotted the elections. However, the State Government rejected this demand. This year, 66 candidates filed their nomination papers to contest the elections to 44 seats. However, the villagers selected the members of the panchayat and the other 22 candidates withdrew their nomination papers. The villagers have ensured that all castes and communities, based on their population, have been given equal representation in the panchayat. The villagers say that consensus on the candidates has avoided unnecessary expenditure and ill-will against each other. Similarly, the residents of K. Belagal Gram Panchayat in Sirguppa taluk have elected all 12 members unopposed. Incidentally, K. Belagal was identified as a hypersensitive area.
