BELGAUM, FEB. 19. The Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, M. Maheshwar Rao, has banned public fairs and jatras held as part of the annual Yellamma fair in Saundatti, and weekly markets in different parts of the district on February 25 on account of the elections to the gram panchayats to be held on that day. Mr. Rao said the administration has made arrangements for the smooth conduct of Sri Renuka Yellammadevi jatre at Yellammana hills in Saundatti. Piped drinking water supply, transportation facilities, makeshift shelters, and lodging arrangements have been made for the devotees. A help centre to cater to the needs of the devotees will also be set up, he added. Mr. Rao said all efforts are being made to ensure that the Devadasi practice is not allowed in any form at the fair.
