HYDERABAD, FEB. 19. Thousands of candidates appearing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) preliminary examination scheduled to be held on May 15 were caught by surprise after the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission issued the Group I main examination notification on Saturday. With the Group I examination beginning May 1, hopes of many candidates, who had been preparing for the UPSC exam, have been belied. A large number of candidates had submitted a memorandum to the commission recently seeking its intervention to commence the Group I examination from May last week to enable them to appear for the UPSC prelims. The candidates argued that those appearing for UPSC prelims would be hard-pressed for time for preparation. Moreover, a couple of them had appeared for the civil services main examination in October last, whose results are expected next month. The interviews for candidates who qualify the UPSC exam in regional language would be held in May.
Confusion
They argued that the Group I schedule would clash with the civil services interviews. "The candidates will be in a dilemma whether to attend the interview or take the Group I examination," a candidate lamented. Stumped by the schedule, the candidates are planning to approach the Commission once again in next two or three days. They are expected to make another appeal to postpone the examination by at least a fortnight. When contacted, the Commission member, C. Chandrasekhar, told The Hindu that if the candidates had any problem, they could approach the grievance cell. "The Commission will discuss their grievance at the next meeting," he added.
