GUNTUR, FEB. 19. Chilli traders and exporters on Saturday said there were no deliberate efforts from them to offer low price for the produce here. They attributed the low purchase price to the availability of high quality chilli in abundance in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The district Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, told traders that 55 per cent of the farmers were bringing similar quality of chilli to the Agriculture Market Yard here and they would be satisfied with at least Rs. 2,300 per quintal, which would break even for them at this stage. She said arrivals at the marketyards in the district would be regulated in the coming days so that glut in the market does not bring down prices. She also advised farmers to properly grade their produce keeping the moisture content below the acceptable limit of 15 per cent.
Plea to farmers
She said chillies had to be dried properly at the farmers' fields and graded by removing all unwanted material and urged to bring the produce as close as possible to fair average quality. This would fetch them better price at the yard, she said and advised them not to rush their produce in a single go to the yard.
