Two killed in cracker explosion
VELLORE FEB. 19 . Two persons were killed and seven others injured as crackers kept in front of a house exploded at Thuthipet near here today. The police said the funeral of Kannika Mandiri (80), who died on Thursday, was scheduled for today, as the son of the deceased had to arrive from the United States. Relatives of the deceased burst crackers while proceeding to the house of Kannika Mandiri. A spark fell on a bag containing crackers kept in the veranda of a house on Bhajanai Koil Street. This led to an explosion. Nine persons injured in the explosion were rushed to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital. C. Vellai Mandiri (65) was brought dead to the hospital, while Chinnakulandhai (65) died after admission. Four of the seriously injured, Kuppan alias Kuppusamy (65), Srinivasan (40), Vignesh (11) and Sivakumar (16), were admitted to the hospital. Satheesh Kumar (15), Radha Badhar (50) and Saranraj (13) were treated as outpatients. N. Rajasekaran, Superintendent of Police, and Pattabhi, DSP, Vellore, visited the spot.
2 die of diarrhoea
RAMANATHAPURAM FEB. 19 . Two persons were died of diarrhoea and 40 others were admitted to hospital at Therkkukattur, near here, last night. Sources said the disease struck at a colony where 500 labourers, mostly from Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, were staying for construction of a private power plant. The deceased were Ravi (4), and Ranjan (42). Eighteen were admitted to the Government Hospital and 10 to a private hospital here. The rest were being treated at a mobile hospital. The Joint Director, Health, P. Jeyapal, said water contamination could be the reason. All tanks and wells were chlorinated.
Student commits suicide
NAMAKKAL FEB. 18 . A Plus-Two student committed suicide at a school here today after he was caught committing a malpractice during a revision test. Deenadayalan (17), son of Amirthalingam of Reddipatti, was caught copying a formula from a piece of paper during the mathematics revision test. The invigilator seized his answer script and directed him to meet the headmaster. Sources said Deenadayalan proceeded to his classroom adjoining a laboratory, and hung himself to death just past noon. On information, school authorities, along with the Chief Educational Officer (in charge), S. Karmegam, informed the police and the district administration. The Namakkal Town police interrogated those present in the examination hall. The body was removed to the government hospital here for post mortem. Some miscreants vandalised a couple of classrooms.
Unlicensed guns recovered
KRISHNAGIRI FEB. 19. The police arrested two persons at Anchetti about 70 km from here on Friday for possessing two unlicensed country made guns. A police team, on a regular patrol in the Anchetti forest area, found Gopal (50) and Nagappan (45) of Natrampalayam moving under suspicious circumstances. It arrested the duo and seized the guns.
Exam results
CHENNAI FEB. 19 . The results of the B.E, B.Tech and B. Arch examinations, conducted by Anna University in November/December last, is likely to be released on February 22, according to a release from M. Sreenivasan, Controller of Examinations.
Plea to cut entertainment tax
CHENNAI FEB. 19 . The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to reduce to 15 per cent the entertainment tax on films dubbed in Tamil from other languages. In a memorandum, the president, C. Sudarsana Srinivasan, said reducing the tax and fixing the levy on a par with those for Tamil movies at 15 per cent would benefit small producers, artistes and technicians who depended on the dubbed movies. He thanked the Chief Minister for her statement that the Government would not allow any attempt to incite violence against the film industry in the name of protecting Tamil.
Gun found missing
TIRUNELVELI FEB. 19. A double-barrel gun provided by the Government to the horticulture farm near Five Falls in Courtallam in 1963 was found missing. The police said the weapon was kept in a sealed room by the Horticulture Officer, Govindarajan, on February 16. When he reported for duty today after being on leave for two days, he found the weapon missing and seal on the lock of the room broken. Based on a complaint from Mr. Govindarajan, the police questioned the watchman, S. Kulathooran of Kasimajorpuram and two casual labourers, Mariappan and Esakkimuthu, of Mela Ilanji.
Appointed to Wakf Board
CHENNAI FEB.19. The State Government has appointed Syed Moinudeen, N.A. Mirza and A. Mohamed Aslam to the Wakf Board.According to a Gazette notification issued yesterday, the appointments were made as per the Wakf Act, 1995, in the vacancies caused by the death of Gulam Ahmed Askari and S. Dastagir and in the place of former Home Secretary, S. Syed Munir Hoda.
TMMK demand
The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam urged the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to direct the Wakf Board to send all its communications only in Tamil to the administrators of mosques.
Man assaulted
Tuticorin Feb.19. The police are on the lookout for six unidentified men, who allegedly assaulted Irudayaraj at Nazerth on Friday. The police said the accused attacked the complainant with a sickle, owing to a dispute over water supply for cultivation. Irudayaraj was admitted to the Tirunleveli Medical College.
Demonstration
Tuticorin Feb.19. Members of the Tuticorin Port Democratic Staff Union today staged a demonstration here today, condemning the authorities' decision to privatise the Berth 8. A total of 40 cadres took part in the agitation held in front of the CISF gate near the new harbour.
Contribution
Tuticorin Feb.19. Sterlite Copper, a private firm, has decided to contribute Rs.7.81 lakhs to Swajhaldhara Drinking Water scheme initiated by the Government in the district. The decision was announced at a meeting of BDOs and panchayat officials, by the company's General Manager, A. Thirunavukkaras, here on Friday. The Rs.8.64-crore scheme was envisaged to cover Melavittan, Sankaraperi, Tuticorin rural and Mappilayoorani panchayats.
AIR programme
TIRUNELVELI FEB.19. The All India Radio, Tirunelveli, has proposed to conduct a 60-minute live programme tomorrow to help students appearing for SSLC and Plus-Two public examinations. According to the Programme Executive, Seetha Namasivayam, the Tirunelveli Regional Deputy Director, R. Chandrasekaran, and the counsellor, A. Shanmugasundaram, would offer useful tips to the students in the programme between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The students and parents may contact 0462 - 2560794, 2560795 and 2560796.
Training programme
KARAIKAL FEB. 19. More than 100 National Cadet Corps and National Social Service volunteers with their officers from various colleges including the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal, underwent training on psychosocial care to tsunami-affected individuals on Thursday as part of an ongoing long-term psychosocial intervention for tsunami victims in Pondicherry. The Department of Psychiatry, JIPMER, Pondicherry, organised the WHO-sponsored programme.
Ends life after stabbing wife
TIRUCHI FEB. 19. A construction worker committed suicide by reportedly leaping in front of a running train at the Fort Railway Station after stabbing his wife, and orphaning their four children, at their residence in Alwarthoppu, in the wee hours on Friday. Police have registered a case. Mettur level By Our Staff Reporter TIRUCHI FEB. 19. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 55.33 feet today. The inflow was 150 cusecs and there was no discharge.
