Recovery of limbs: murder suspected

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, FEB. 19. The case of the severed legs found at Pennarthode, a rivulet that joins the Vembanad Lake near Kumarakom on Wednesday night, is unfurling into a case of gruesome murder, with more parts of a man's body retrieved from near the Thanneermukkom bund on Saturday.

The torso surfaced on Saturday morning and later two arms in a plastic bag were retrieved from nearby area. The police said that they have not yet found the head and refused to make any comment on the identity of the person.

However, the investigation is moving in the direction of one missing Unni alias Praveen (24), son of Pavithran of Mevakkad House, Madappad, near Ettumanur. Praveen's relatives had identified the legs on Friday evening and they today identified the arms, on the basis of the watch worn by the victim, which was still present on the severed arms.

Praveen had been working with a private bus service operating in Kochi, but had left the organisation following personal issues. The needle of suspicion at the moment is directed towards a police officer, a relative of the victim, who is said to have considerable stake in the enterprise. He is being interrogated by the police in this connection.
