SI cremated after police chief's assurance

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 19. The body of Sub-Inspector, Mahesh Yadav, who had committed suicide in West Delhi on Friday, was finally accepted by his family and consigned to flames today after the Delhi Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, assured them of a thorough inquiry against the officer who allegedly used to harass the SI.

Dr. Paul assured Mahesh's brother and father of action, commensurate to the findings of the inquiry, against the officer when they met him in his office at police headquarters here around 10-15 a.m.

Following the meeting, the family accepted Mahesh's body which had been lying in the mortuary after post-mortem since yesterday. They had been demanding that a case of abetment to suicide be immediately registered against the Assistant Commissioner of Police who had allegedly been harassing Mahesh for the past couple of months. Dr. Paul had already ordered the Joint Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) to conduct an inquiry into the allegations.

The body of the deceased was subsequently taken to his native village in Baghpat where it was consigned to flames. While senior police officials went to attend the cremation not many of Mahesh's colleagues could go to Baghpat.

Mahesh was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his house by his wife, Kavita, yesterday morning. She had woken up around 6 a.m. and had found her husband missing. She then went looking for him and found him hanging from the fan in the next room. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The local police had found some bloodstains on the floor. The family said the body had fallen on the ground, with the head hitting first, when they were trying to bring it down. The police said they were awaiting post-mortem report.

Later, Kavita had alleged in a written complaint to the local police that Mahesh, who was posted with the Delhi Traffic Police and deployed in Defence Colony circle for the past couple of months, had been humiliated by his ACP many times. It was alleged that the ACP pressurised Mahesh to raise a couple of thousands of rupees everyday.

Kavita, a teacher in a Janakpuri school, had also said that Mahesh was looking visibly disturbed for the past few days and used to have long discussions about the unethical practices prevailing in the force.

Mahesh, son of a retired Army personnel, had completed his masters in science and also had a bachelor's degree in law from Meerut University. He had passed the examination for the post of commandant in the Border Security Force in 1996 and, around the same time, he was also selected for the post of the SI in the Delhi police. He decided to join the Delhi police. His first posting was in West Delhi where he spent his initial years and was then posted with the Security Wing and deployed at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He got married in 2000 and has left behind a four-year-old son.
