JAMMU, FEB. 20. Thirty-four persons were feared killed in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir as fresh snowfall and rains lashed the State. Police sources told The Hindu this evening that eighteen persons were killed in Poonch, while six persons were feared killed in the Navapachi area of the Kishtwar tehsil in Doda district, as a series of avalanches hit the higher reaches of the State. A fresh avalanche in the Gul area of Udhampur district buried seven houses today evening. Ten persons were feared to have died. Meanwhile, 2000 persons were stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway1A. The Superintendent of Police, Ramban Garib Das, said, "The stranded people on the highway have been accommodated in safer areas."
