Get training through ASC, Collector tells SHGs

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, FEB.20. The Collector, Atul Anand, today said all services, particularly the range of trainings in agricultural techniques, to be offered by the newly inaugurated Agriculture Support Centre by the Killikulam Agricultural College and Engineering at Palayamkottai would be rightly used to improve the revenue of self-help groups.

Inaugurating the ASC today, Mr. Atul Anand said the SHG members should get trained through the ASC and efforts would be made to bear the expenditure incurred on the course fee and the transportation of the interested SHG members to the venue.

Since there was a very good demand for vermicompost, a harmless manure, training in this technique could be imparted to all SHG members.

He said the ASC had introduced sweet sorghum cultivation at the right time since the district experienced drought-like situation a couple of years ago, owing to scanty rainfall.

"Since this drought-resistant crop requires a small quantity of water to give yield in just three months, it should be popularised everywhere so that poor farmers in the rural areas would stand benefited. Similarly, the System of Rice Intensification method should reach every nook and corner of the Thamirabarani basin as it gives 20 to 30 per cent more yield," Mr. Atul Anand said.

The Collector also inaugurated the sale of vegetable seeds.

Assuring all sorts of help to strengthen the ASC, the Tirunelveli MP, R. Dhanushkodi Adityan, said the training fee for the first 25 participants would be borne by the Antarctica Educational Trust, in which he is one of the trustees.

The Mayor, A. Jayarani, the Registrar, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, D. Sundar Singh, the Assistant Director, Agriculture, R. Dhanushkodi, and others spoke.
