CDs on folk art forms released

HYDERABAD: Different forms of folk arts depicting the cultural heritage of the State have been documented and released in the form of Compact Discs (CDs) by Praja Natya Mandali, a cultural organisation, on the eve of its 7th State conference to be held here from February 21 to 25.

The film director, B. Narsing Rao, released the seven CDs containing 76 folk art forms. These were picturised during the folk festival held at Hyderabad two years ago. Mr. Rao also released a CD `Veera Telangana' containing street plays highlighting the peasants' struggle of Telanagana against the erstwhile Nizam. Another CD highlighting social issues was also released.

The Praja Natya Mandali president, Jagga Raju, said the CDs, priced at Rs. 100 each would be on sale during the State conference. Over 400 delegates were expected for the conference.

ST employees seek justice

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Tribes Employees Association (APSTEA) on Sunday urged the Government to focus attention on their long-pending problems.

Their demands include cadre-wise implementation of rule of reservation in direct recruitment and filling up backlog vacancies and promotions, reservations in private sector, special courts to weed out bogus caste certificate holders and removal of income ceiling for sanction of merit, Pratibha and other scholarships to tribal students.

The issues were raised at the general body meet of the APSTEA attended by the member, National Commission for STs, B. Srinivasulu, chairman, Andhra Pradesh ST Cooperative Finance Corporation, Devara Subba Rao, member, State Committee for STs and SCs, K. Nagaiah, the APSTEA founder chairman, K. Ranga Rao, the president, E. Anjaneyulu, and the general secretary, S. Bala Linganna.

TDP extends membership drive

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has extended its membership drive till March 2, according to a party spokesman. The decision was taken after the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday evening held a teleconference with leaders in all the 23 districts of the State to review the enrolment process. Party sources claimed that they were able to achieve 50 per cent of the target set on an average in each district.

While the last date for enrolment had earlier been fixed as February 20, the extension was necessitated because of the huge number of party sympathisers and others who had been taken into custody by the police after the murder of the TDP MLA from Penukonda, Paritala Ravi, the spokesman said.

Tight security for YSR's visit

Kakinada: Additional police forces including officers were being deployed for bandobust duty from the neighbouring districts for the ensuing visit of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to East Godavari district for the Rajiv Nagara Bata programme on February 26, according to the Superintendent of Police, V. Naveen Chand.

He said here on Sunday that two checkposts were being set up at Kakinada and Amalapuram besides constituting route-checking parties. The Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, also reviewed arrangements for the Chief Minister's visit at a meeting at the Collectorate.

94 leather parks to come up

TIRUPATI: The State Government will establish 94 leather parks across the State, N. Reddeppa, Chairman of the Leather Industries Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (LIDCAP), said on Sunday.

He disbursed loans through the SC Corporation to the 14 master trainers, who got trained at Chennai through LIDCAP, at a function organised here. He said the corporation was committed to the economic uplift of lakhs of artisans dependant on the leather industry. Twenty artisans from the district have been picked up for skill upgradation at the training centres established in Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Varadaiahpalem.

A total of 72 mini leather parks, 16 medium parks and six mega parks would be established in the State, as part of which Chittoor district would get mini parks at Renigunta, Madanapalle, Kambakam and Kuppam, a medium park at Kambakam and a mega park in Gangadhara Nellore. The MLA, M. Venkataramana, and district project officer, P. D. Mallikharjuna Rao, were present.

Farmer commits suicide

NIZAMABAD: A farmer, Chintakunta Ram Reddy (32), of Mandapur village in Domakonda mandal, committed suicide by hanging from a tree on his fields last night. Reddy is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

According to information reaching here, Reddy borrowed Rs. 1 lakh and had dug six borewells on his six-acre land, but all of them failed. Unable to bear it, he took the extreme step.

Farm worker ends life

Kakinada: Ponnapu Anjaneyulu (55), a farm worker of Avidi village in Kothapet mandal, reportedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Palchalarevu, on the village outskirts, yesterday. He died on the way to hospital. According to the Kothapet police, chronic abdominal pain was said to be reason for his suicide.

Four students suffer burns

CUDDAPAH: Four school students sustained severe burns and 11 others suffered injuries when battery acid spilled over them when the school van overturned near Annavaram in Chapadu mandal, yesterday.

Nayab Rasool of Yerraballe, a class I student, M. Vinod Reddy and B. Sudarshan Reddy of Bankachinnayapalle and Loknath Reddy of Vengannagaripalle village, all from class 4 in Jeevanjyothi Public School in Proddatur town, suffered 90 per cent burns. The injured have been identified as -- Lakshminath Reddy, Mahalakshmi, Menaka, Sridhar Reddy, Anil Reddy, Sivabhaskar Reddy, Amarnath Reddy, Marrinath Reddy, Ramamohana Reddy and Lakshminarayana. A teacher, Narayana, suffered a fracture of his right hand. The van driver, Sudhakar Reddy, fled after the mishap.

Man kills 3-year-old son?

KURNOOL: A three-year-old boy was stoned to death allegedly by his father at Palamarri village, under the Pagidyala police station limits in Kurnool district, on Sunday. According to reports, in a fit of emotion, B. Ramana, murdered his son, Srikant, who died on the spot. The police are investigating.

Charged with double murder

KHAMMAM: A man allegedly killed his brother and a cousin in Palamadugu village of Bhadrachalam rural mandal, yesterday night. The police said Parisaka Sitaiah clubbed to death his brother, Adinarayana, and cousin, Venkaiah, after a drunken brawl. Sitaiah was reportedly angry at the duo for talking ill about his estranged wife. The Bhadrachalam rural police took the accused into custody. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and investigation is on.

Trader fatally

knocked down

CUDDAPAH: A groundnut trader, Suddamalla Gurivi Reddy (38), of Sanjeevanagar in Proddatur town, was fatally knocked down by a bus on Sunday.

He was going to Pottipadu when the mishap occurred. His brother, however, escaped unhurt. The Proddatur Taluk police registered a case.

In another incident, a 23-year-old woman, Lalitha (23), died mysteriously in Bosenagar in Rayachoti town on Saturday night. Her mother, Narayanamma, lodged a complaint with police alleging that her husband, Prasad, his parents and relatives killed her. The Rayachoti Urban CI, Harinatha Babu, visited the spot a case was registered.

Minorities panel

chief's visit

CUDDAPAH: The Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Commission Chairman, Justice Syed Sadathulla Hussaini, will tour Cuddapah district from February 21 to 23.

He will address minorities at the Collectorate Sabha Bhavan on February 22 afternoon, the District Minorities Welfare Officer, P. Mahabub Khan, said.

Eye camp inaugurated

KURNOOL: The Postal Department and Balasai Baba Trust jointly sponsored an eye camp for postal employees at P and T Colony here on Sunday.

The Postal Superintendent, Mahabub Basha, formally inaugurated the camp.

Ph.D. awarded

KURNOOL: S. Mansoor Rahimon, lecturer in Osmania College, was awarded doctorate in Economics by Sri Krishnadevaraya University for his thesis, "Urbanisation- Development of Andhra Pradesh'', according to a press note.

CUDDAPAH: A commerce lecturer in Government College for Men here, B.C. Saraswathy, has been awarded Ph.D. by Sri Venkateswara University for her thesis on `working capital management in cement industry in Andhra Pradesh'.
