BJP fears heavy dose of taxes
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
FEB. 20.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fears a heavy dose of taxation in the Congress Government to cover up the huge deficit in the latest State budget.
Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the BJP national secretary, B. Dattatreya, said the budget was bereft of the pre-election promises of the Congress. For instance, there was no provision for its promises on free education for girls in all schools, Rs. 100 subsidy on LPG cylinders and interest on loan for unemployed youth at three per cent.
The Government had also promised to phase out liquor but on the contrary adopted a liberalised excise policy. Farmers and handloom weavers were worst hit by the budget.
Mr. Dattatreya expected the Congress to return to power in Haryana and the BJP might make it in Jharkhand. He said the results in Bihar would alter the equations between UPA partners at the Centre.
