Ban on irrigation for oil palm suggested
By Our Staff Reporter
PEDAVEGI (WEST GODAVARI DIST),
FEB. 20.
M. Kochu Babu, Director, National Research Centre (NRC) for Oil Palm, on Sunday mooted a blanket ban on flood or basin irrigation in oil palm in order to give an impetus to the mission for water conservation.
Presenting a paper on "Oil palm research in India'' at a national seminar on "Research and development of oil palm in India,'' he called for a consensus among scientists associated with research in oil palm on the issue.
He said the drip or micro irrigation was the best alternative to flood irrigation. He informed that an irrigation experiment made by the NRC in its demonstration plots using three irrigation systems revealed that morphological and physiological parameters were better in drip or jet irrigated oil palm plantations.
