COIMBATORE, FEB. 20. Agricultural scientists will carry out 36 network research projects at various centres in the country with support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said the Deputy Director-General, Horticulture and Crop Science, ICAR, G. Kalloo, here. Under such programmes, three or four institutions would join hands to carry out a project, with one being the nodal centre coordinating the research. Each centre would complete specific tasks vital for the entire project to be completed successfully. At the three-day 20th Annual Group meeting of the National Seeds Project at the University, Prof. Kalloo said seeds were the most important input for farmers. Hence, the ICAR wanted to improve the seed sector. "New network projects on seed are warranted in areas such as seed physiology, pathology, molecular biology, seed storage and hybrid rice seed production," he said, adding that experts should educate farmers about treatment that could protect seeds against pathogens. The Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, C. Ramasamy, said public and private seed sectors should make efforts to ensure better output of seeds. It would be a good idea to network seed certification agencies, seed production agencies and research centres. Private agencies should reduce the cost of their seeds to bring them within the paying capacity of farmers. Owing to the limitations of the public seed sector, investments by multinational companies should be welcomed. The National Seed Project should take into account the seed-marketing factor, and include it in its research projects. "The production of breeder seed has increased from 391.4 tonnes in 1981-82 to 2,458 tonnes in 2002-03. The requirement of quality seeds by 2010 is estimated to be 14-lakh tonnes. Therefore, this calls for concerted action by the public and private sectors," Prof. Ramasamy said.
