By Our Staff Reporter
ALAPPUZHA, FEB. 20. A `Lok Adalat' was held at Mangalam village in Arattupuzha panchayat in the district today as per the High Court decision to find a solution to tsunami victims' complaints on relief operations. In addition to the three-member committee, headed by the Alappuzha District and Sessions Judge, A. Sainudeen, appointed by the High Court to conduct the adalat, judges of lower courts in the district and officials of various departments participated in the adalat. The adalat that began at 9 a.m. lasted till evening. The High Court Judge, K.A. Abdul Gafoor, who inaugurated the adalat, said it was the first of its kind in the country. Tsunami victims who had complaints about relief works could approach the adalat or courts directly, he said. The Alappuzha municipal chairperson, Lalithamma Somanathan, who is a member of the committee, told The Hindu that the authorities had been asked to take steps to provide monetary aid to those whose houses had been partially or completely destroyed. The main complaint of the tsunami-hit was that the authorities have not prepared the list of beneficiaries who are to be given aid. The authorities said the list would be published without delay.
