NEW DELHI, FEB. 20. It was a treat for the vintage car lovers who came from all over the place to take part in the 39th edition of the Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally today.

As many as 97 cars were flagged off from Barakhamba Road by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Arun Prakash, this morning. A large number of people gathered along the rally route to Malibu Towne and Gurgaon to cheer the occupants of the elegant cars.

On display were vehicles ranging from Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Buick and Jaguar models. And to make the event more exciting, some of the participants wore costumes of the period when their vehicles were in vogue.

While 20 of the vehicles could not make it to the finishing line, the Statesman trophy for the oldest participant went to the 1914 John Morris fire-engine of the National Rail Transport Museum.

Daljit Titus, with his 10 entries, walked away with six trophies, both in the `Vintage' and the `Classic' sections. The coveted Bikram Singh memorial trophy for restoration was also awarded to his 1927-Minerva, while the JK trophy for the best first time entry was bestowed on black MG 1932 owned by Ravinder Mohan.

Kanti Kathpalia award for the best lady driver went to Ira, who drove a 1938 Buick. The best maintained Classic Car award went to 1951-Jaguar from the Imperial Hotel, whereas a Ford owned by Ajay Kapoor registered the best performance in the Post-War section 1960.
