`Industry gains from transfer of tech'

HYDERABAD, FEB. 20. Several technologies developed by DRDO's laboratories have been transferred and adopted by the industry, including those in the areas of food processing and healthcare. Delivering a talk on `Spin-off biotechnologies and medical devices,' organised by MARCH, the Chief Controller (R&D, Life Sciences and Human Resources), DRDO, W. Selvamurthy, said instant food like MTR were based on DRDO know-how.

The strength of DRDO was in developing connectivity between academia and industry, he added.

Dr. Selvamurthy said at least 10 food technologies developed by DRDO were transferred for commercial production. Farmers in high altitude regions of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir were able to cultivate 45 per cent of the vegetables required by them through the technique developed by the defence labs for growing vegetables in adverse climatic conditions.

Clothing for extremes

Similarly the DRDO also developed technology for clothing and accessories in extremely cold and hot arid conditions and transferred the same to about 25 to 30 vendors.

K.V. Raghavan, Chairman, Recruitment and Assessment Centre, DRDO, and well-known scientist, P.M. Bhargava, also spoke.
